We don’t usually manipulate the intelligence and commitment that kids who are ATV enthusiasts but Tommy’s a very bright and intelligent kid who’s really…just REALLY good on his ATV. Because of his incredible dexterity on this quad, he’s often the highlight of every other kids’ visits to the park near his house. Tommy’s mother who is also a somewhat-enthusiast thinks that as long as Tommy’s obsession with ATV-riding does not interfere with his school work and social life, ATV riding for this kid is a a-OK. While his mom approved of this short interview, a picture was a no-go for her, so….
We got to dig into Tomy’s brain a little recently and with the permission of his mother, we’re going to ‘entertain’ you with what kids today think of ATV riding.
ATV4kids: How old were you when you got your first ATV?
Tommy: I think I was four
ATV4kids: Were you any good then?
Tommy: I was pretty good. But my cousin, Brett, was better than me then and he always teased me a lot about me. I didn’t like him a lot but now I do. I’m faster now.
ATV4kids: Do you tease him back now?
Tommy: (Giggles) Yeah…sometimes when he gets on my nerves.
ATV4kids: Do you want to be a professional ATV racer when you grow up?
Tommy: Yes, I want to but my mom thinks it’s kinda dangerous and that I should do my homework first.
ATV4kids: She nags?
Tommy: (sneaks a look at his mom then whispers) Yeah.

ATV4kids: What makes you so good on your quad and you’re just a kid, so, do others admire you or something?
Tommy: I practice a lot, that’s why! And yeah, the other kids are like wow, wee, whoa all the time when I ride my ATV…and I think that’s cool.
ATV4kids: So that makes you feel like a superstar, huh?
Tommy: Hee heee….yeah. It’s cool.
ATV4kids: What do you think of safety when you ride your ATV?
Tommy: It’s the most important thing to me right now because I almost got into a really serious accident about a year back. And my mom said that if I didn’t wear the whole thing, she’d throw my ATV out. Nuh-uh…ain’t gonna happen.
ATV4kids: What do you wear when you ride your ATV?
Tommy: I wear the helmet, then the elbow and knee guars. I have a body protector and goggles. I have clothes for quad riding too. My mom bought them and she said she had to mortgage the house for all of those. (At this point, we burst out laughing)
ATV4kids: Do all your friends ride?
Tommy: Not all of them…but most of them. I try to get them all to ride so that we can all hang out together riding as much as we can. But not all of them can or are allowed to. Some of their mothers are, like….scared or something.
ATV4kids: What’s the coolest thing about being good at ATV riding as a kid?
Tommy: It’s cool and when you, like, finish a lap or something and you know you did better than the last time, you kinda feel like you’re on top of the world or something. It’s just really neat.
ATV4kids: So, you’re probably going to be at this for the long haul.
Tommy: (Cheekily) Oh, yyyyeeessss…..
ATV4kids: What’s more important….your kids ATV or your Nintendo?
Tommy: ATV, of course, you nuts?!
