YOUTH ATV SAFETY

An ATV is not a motorcycle

Let's really start of with the basics. These are things that your ATV guide would let you know, teach you and pummel into your head before you even get on your ATV. At every venue for these ATV events, there'll be someone out there gathering all the riders around and repeating these rules to you no matter your skill level…you're just going to have to listen to it until you get it. If you're dealing with kids, you'll need to do the same thing too.

All we know is that a kid should not be allowed to ride on an adult ATV but do we know what is the recommended engine size for a kid? here's a clue…

6 years and above – 70cc

12 years to 16 years – 90cc

16 years and older – 90cc and above.

The reason why the rule is such is so that not only will the ATV rider be safe, everyone will have more fun this way without having to worry about unnecessary incidents.

One ATV for one person – that's the rule. There are exceptions but that's only when one ATV breaks down and both are lost. Kids' ATV are usually not made for two people, so, it's going to be a tight squeeze if they decided to ride together on one Kids' ATV. Some adult-sized ATVs or slightly larger ATVs can carry two persons. But generally speaking, doubling up is highly discouraged.

One more important note…and this is to check your ATV before racing on it. A pre-ride inspection includes checking the suspension, wheels, fuel and oil level, brakes (very important!). the ATV rider should also check whether the controls are working or not. it might sound like a whole lot of trouble but if you know your ATV, this pre-ride inspection usually takes minutes, so, don't skip it….do it!

As long as the engine of the ATV is running, the helmet should be on your head…and not sitting under your arm! Even if it's a short ride to get your gears ready or a test ride on the ATV, get that helmet on.

One last thing (but not the least important) is to remember not to race within the pit or camping area. This is where people are resting and gathering and it's definitely the wrong place to start racing…even if you're just kidding around with your pals. Not only is it unsafe, it's also extremely noisy and dirty (because of all the dirt that'll be flying all around the pit and camping site).
