Mother looking for ATV helmets for her kids

QUESTION
I am a mother of four kids and recently, two of my kids (both boys, thankfully) have taken to ATV riding. These kids are 6 and 8 and I guess they're old enough to decide for themselves what they like to take up as a sport. I've been looking through your ATV helmet selection and wonder if there are specific things that I should understand and look out for. My husband and I are both completely ATV illiterate, so, we're not too good with all this.

Kelly
Thanks.

ANSWER
Hey there, Kelly,

Every time I hear of parents being supportive about their kids' enthusiasm for ATV riding, I feel like popping a champagne bottle. Maybe that's because I think ATV riding for kids is safe and very physically and emotionally challenging. Anyway, about buying ATV helmets for your kids, I would look at, first of all, the hygiene issue. You know how kids can get and somehow or the other, I hate the idea of having to clean the ATV helmets they wear too often. So, if the kids' ATV helmet provides for good and easy cleaning, it would be amazing.

We have a couple of ATV helmets here with hypo-allergenic and antimicrobial nylon helmet liner and cheek pads. I suggest grabbing those because you can just remove the lining and clean them individually. Make s a lot of difference, just let me tell you that. And the drying up process is quick too. Kids with sensitive skin can also wear these ATV helmets as it does not irritate the skin or cause breakouts in youths.

Before you buy ATV helmets for your kids, you'll have to know that measuring the circumference of your kids' heads and reading the guideline to buying ATV helmets is an important not-to-be-skipped process. This ensures that you're buying ATV helmet the right size. Another thing that some parents miss out on is the shield. Some low quality ATV helmets have shields that distort what the kids see. And that is a big NO NO NO! Seeing well is extremely important to their safety. The curve of the shield must be curved properly so that it does not affect their vision. If the shield of the ATV helmet is scratch resistant and protects against UV rays, all the better. But you can probably do without it.

Comfort is of utmost importance, so, when the ATV helmet arrives, the first thing that you ought to do is to fit it to the child's head and see if it fits perfectly. Ask the kid to swing around, look around to check for comfort level or if there's enough space for anything else (like speakers) inside the helmet. And one last thing to observe is this….be sure that the kids' ATV helmet conforms to DOT FMVSS-218 motorcycle helmet safety standards.

Yours,
Marissa
