Quick ATV Tip: Measuring Stiction
|
In a perfect world, ATVs would never have bearing problems and you would never have to be concerned about the condition of your ATV and will never have to perform the regular maintenance that you're doing right now. but we're not living in a perfect world. If you don't maintain your ATV properly, it will go into disrepair and soon, you'd feel the difference in performance. Now, one of the things that you would have to consider and do is to measure the stiction of your ATV quite regularly to determine if you need to replace your ATV's linkage bearings. It doesn't take a genius to do this because we're giving a quick ATV tip here. First, lift up the back grab bar and let it drop. You'll need your good ole reliable measuring tape just about right here. Grab the measuring tape and take it to your ATV, measure the distance between the floor and the grab bar. This part of the ATV maintenance will have to be done quite regularly, so, you'll need a small notebook (or even a small piece of paper) so that you can write down the measurement. Secondly, push the grab bar by applying your weight on to it and let it drop. It will probably take some time to sink a little, so, wait a couple of minutes for it to settle properly. rely on your instincts for this one, when you think it's time, grab that measuring tape again, measure the distance between the grab bar and the floor again. Note it down in that paper or notebook. Third….now that you have BOTH measurements, note down the difference between the first and the second. Unless you're living in the perfect world that we're all dreaming
off, you'll notice, over time, that the stiction value will increase.
Use your judgment. When the stiction value rises to a point whereby
you think it needs replacement, replace it because it is getting
dry and needs grease.
