ATV tips for mud riding

People have different preferences when it comes to ATV riding. some can't get away from the hills because they get to ride their ATVs and enjoy the splendid scenery at the same time. Some love the sand while others enjoy getting their ATVs (and themselves) all dirty and muddy! It's hard to find a single track or trail that consists of only one type of racing environment because even the sandiest type of ATV trail will have puddles to go through. But the kind of mud we're most likely to need help on is the knee-deep, or more appropriately the wheel-deep kind of mud ATV terrain.

You probably don't need any help in going through the small ATV track puddles because all you need is to hold the ATV steady and then ride through it. Some prefer to ride around the mud puddle no matter how big or deep it is. But let's make it a little harder for those guys at the back by riding through the middle of the mud puddle to make it just that much deeper and bigger.

When it comes to a mud puddle that you're not sure whether to ride your ATV through it or to ask your friend to have a go at it first. No, we don't mean this as a joke – if your friend is riding an ATV that is smaller than yours, it is wiser to get the smaller guy to go through it first – if the small ATV can make it, you can to. And well, if he/she is out of luck, at least the smaller ATV is easier to tow out than compared to a larger ATV. If you have a bigger ATV and if the small ATV gets stuck in a mud puddle, then you can easily use your bigger ATV to tow out the small guy. Imagine what would happen if it's the other way around – albeit the smaller ATV trying to tow out the big monster ATV.

When you're approaching the mud puddle, it'd be wise to gather the speed of your ATV before you go over the mud puddle, just before going through it, stand up so that you will have better control over how to maneuver the ATV over the mud puddle. Sometimes things don't work out that way and you can feel that your front wheel is starting to spin, shift your weight from front to back, like you're on a rocking horse, to get better traction.

So, if you plan to go ATV riding in mud, don't forget the following things. One, your winch. Never leave home with it. Two, your friend. Your friend, especially in cases of muddy terrains, is a good idea so that you don't have to yank and haul your ATV back to dry ground when you're stuck. Three, your mobile phone. It'd be a true life-saver if you have coverage where you are. Four, your camera. Since you're stuck and waiting for the rest of catch up with you so that they can help you get out, you might as well snap a few quickies of the stuck ATV…for the sake of the family photo album.
